The corner of Sixth and Market is a tough place to open a business, and Pearl's Deluxe Burgers made a go of it for awhile before closing earlier this year. In its place comes the more breakfast-oriented Home Skillet, possibly a savvier proposition considering the neighborhood's early-morning traffic. Home Skillet is a project of John Chow, who also owns the American breakfast joint Little Griddle four blocks down Market. The intersection has lots of good food (Show Dogs, Tu Lan, and the Taqueria Cancun location that's pretty much only for the die-hards) but lots of people avoid it like the plague. They shouldn't.
It's cheerful, having kept Pearl's red-and-white-striped awning and adding lots of nice, decorative touches. There's a Rosie the Riveter and some art that spells out commandments to eat, plus mismatched furniture (which works great in casual settings). Home Skillet didn't stop at Americana, either. There's Parisiana (framed prints of Art Nouveau ballerinas) and Tibet-ana (colorful flags).
More importantly, the breakfast burrito is fantastic. It's large, flavorful and they didn't skimp on the chorizo -- plus the side of hash browns must have been apportioned on an almost comically oversized spatula. Do you, from time to time, like to eat a food mountain? Then you need to go to Home Skillet. That green tortilla might offend some purists, in which case you can head over to Brioche French Toast country or gussy up your plate with a Shroom Florentine (an English muffin with mushroom, baby spinach, poached eggs and hollandaise). Lunch is burger-heavy, and coffee and tea are from Equator, and that about covers it. Home Skillet keeps it simple and good, and that's exactly what Sixth and Market needs.
