Tipping used to be a matter between yourself, your server, and God (unless you're Larry David), but with the advent of mobile payment systems like Square, now a third party is privy to how generous or miserly you are. Square's done some number-crunching to reveal the most important data of our time: Which S.F. neighborhoods contain the best and worst tippers.
Surprisingly, Hayes Valley/Tenderloin (94102 zipcode) has the most generous tippers -- 64 percent of customers leave one at a Square business -- though we suspect that most of those are made out of sheer gratitude that the Blue Bottle on Linden now takes credit cards. Businesses in the Marina and SOMA/Mid-Market see the largest tips (18 percent, nice work everyone).
Cheap bastards reside in or visit the Inner Sunset and Twin Peaks/Glen Park, where a little less than half tip at all. The lowest tips are seen in the Presidio (what, do workers on federal land not warrant the same respect?) and the Embarcadero (tourists, obviously).
Just some more fuel to add to the class warfare fire.
