For some of us, eating several dozen wings from Wing Wings is known as "Thursday," but the Lower Haight wing emporium is hosting its official second annual wing-eating contest at El Rio on Saturday, Dec. 14, 1-5 p.m. Aspiring champions can sign up in advance for two categories: A timed event, where contestants eat as many Angry Korean wings as they can in 10 minutes (water will be available), and a hella hella hot competition, where contestants will see who can eat 10 hella hella hot wings the fastest (contestants need to sit at a table for an additional five minutes with no food or drink after finishing).
The contest and accompanying raffle benefits Casa De Los Madres, a non-profit for women, teens, and children exposed to or at risk of abuse and domestic violence. Contestants need to come up with $250 in pledged donations to participate (they also have to be over 21, and sign a waiver).
Last year the champion ate 45 Angry Korean wings in 10 minutes — which may not sound like a ton, but each wing needs to be cleaned down to the bone. ("Verifying each wing was the least fun part of the contest," Wing Wings owner Christian Ciscle wrote in an email. We don't doubt it.) Last year's "hella hella hot" wings were tossed in a wasabi-chile dust with habanero sauce, chopped fresh habaneros, and Thai chiles, but Ciscle promises that this year's will be even hotter.
To enter, contestants should email the following information to email@example.com by Monday, Dec. 9:
- Eating competition nickname (be creative!)
- Timed or hella hot event (choose one)
- Previous eating competition experience
- Why do you think you can win(g)??
- Theme song
Those who don't want to enter but do want to see the madness go down can pay $5 at the door (cover also goes to Casa De Las Madres), and enjoy wings, drink specials, raffle prizes, and more.
When: Saturday, Dec. 14, 1-5 p.m. (competition starts at 2 p.m.)
Where: El Rio, 3158 Mission
Cost: $5 at the door
