It wasn't too long ago that beer events were few and far between. Beer dinners and special release events were a rarity, and many beer festivals focused more on over-indulgence than critical engagement (don't get us wrong, we like to hit the sauce from time to time too). Now that the beer fad has become a solidified element of our culinary landscape, beer-centric gatherings have become ubiquitous. As a result, we're seeing a widening gap between so-called "consumption fests" and gatherings focused on connoisseurship and beer geekery. The country's premiere beer website (and local darling), Ratebeer, is helping to carry the torch for the latter.
Tomorrow (Nov. 9), the North Bay-headquartered website presents its second Gallery Event, "Beauty from a Barrel." Yes, you can expect barrel-aged (and fresh) beers from some of the most sought-after breweries in the country. Some highlights include the barrel-aged version of Prairie Bomb!, a special surprise barreled treat from Lagunitas, and the west coast debut of a new Kriek from Belgian sour producer Oud Beersel.
You can also expect some curated beer and food pairings, with treats from Dandelion Chocolates and cheeses from the new Tomales Farmstead Creamery. To boot, Master Cicerone Nicole Erny will be on hand to lead a seminar in Beer & Food Pairing. That's not where the education ends. In addition to the unlimited 5-ounce beer pours and access to three stories of beer-themed art, folks can attend the following talks:
