The most desirable birthday parties always have cupcakes that uncannily disappear off the buffet table in a flash compared to (lame) baby carrots with dip. For a birthday party at one of Valencia's hottest properties, we'd expect nothing better than the introduction of new treats with names like After School Special and The Hasselhoff. Chef William Werner at Craftsman and Wolves (746 Valencia) has cupcake offerings for the first time ever to celebrate turning one.

There's even a not-too-sweet cupcake called Carrots and Wolves with an adorably petite carrot macaron atop carrot cake with subtle and pleasing hints of cocoa. Yes, there's a cream cheese frosting, but Werner elevates it by incorporating brown butter that adds a caramel-y flavor note.

Six varieties of cupcakes are in the pastry case, with flavors that include Lemon Zinger, Cookies and Cream, After School Special, chocolate Blackout cake, and a Matcha cupcake with the fun name and color of Extraterrestrial Green. The space is decorated with a heavy emphasis on pink that is a departure from the usual cool grey tones: streamers abound and customers can get complimentary colorful birthday hats and noisemakers to go with those $2.25 cupcakes. We spotted exactly one guest goin' to town with the noisemaker, and he's age 5.

Werner's staff had on pink special edition t-shirts ($20) that remind us of our own rainbow and heart obsessed "art" from the 80s. Don a tee starting June 21 and get 10% off at the store "for life," says Werner. "We had 50 of the shirts made and around 30 are available for sale until the supply runs out." Party down.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
