If you want to be technical about it, any sandwich consumed first thing in the morning is a "breakfast sandwich," but we know what you're really after as you roll groggily out of bed: oozing, melted cheese, fluffy scrambled or fried eggs, optional (but not really) meat of choice, all encased by sweet, glorious carbohydrates.
So many considerations must be taken into account: bun-to-filling ratio, additions and house-made components. There are fancy variations and grease bombs, snacks and meals that meet the daily caloric intake. Each has its place in our hearts and stomachs.

10. Cafe Me (500 Washington St.)
While it may not be gourmet by any means, Cafe Mé certainly gets the job done, and well. Far-and-away the cheapest option on the list, you can be in and out of this place in under two minutes flat for $2.75, feeling full from one of five types of toasted House of Bagels bagels, an egg, salt and pepper, gooey American cheese and just a touch of butter. Rather than remain at the mercy of any one set menu item, take the liberty to jazz it up your own way with one of ten add-ons ranging from capers and cucumbers to lox or peanut butter. You can put it on an English muffin, toast, a croissant or tortilla. You can even add a cup of coffee to any order for just a buck. At Café Me, the world of breakfast sandwiches is your oyster (though, fair warning, they don't actually have those).
9. Bacon Bacon (205A Frederick St.)
It's no secret that the star of every dish at Bacon Bacon's cafe and truck is the namesake swine. However, delve deeper when ordering "The Breakfast Sandwich," and don't overlook the oversized, light, buttery brioche bun slathered with sweet-and-salty bacon jam binding all the pieces in place. Topped with melted cheddar and perfectly over-easy eggs (and, of course, stips uponon strips of bacon), it's the ideal accompaniment to a frothy morning latté.
8. L'Acajou (498 9th St.)
SoMa's bakery and café on 9th street boasts an array of freshly baked sweets and homemade breads, and uses their house-made, oregano-dusted roll to as a base for the breakfast sandwich. First, a swipe of tangy dijon mustard lays the foundation for a fried egg, fresh tomato, melted gruyere cheese and a decent helping of crispy pancetta, eschewing the standard bacon. It is served alongside some lettuce, but come on: let's be real here.
7. Cassava (3519 Balboa St.)
Owners Kristoffer and Yuka have received tremendous praise for their quiche at their quaint Outer Richmond outpost, but the breakfast sandwich is a surefire winner as well. Though it changes every-so-often, we tried the toasted Semmifreddi's butter croissant with black forest ham, Vermont white cheddar, peppery arugula, and freshly sliced tomato. An airy omelette infused with garlic butter serves as the anchor, and packs a healthy but not overly-so punch of the stinking rose. Still, maybe not ideal for a first date breakfast choice.
