Tara's Organic Ice Cream began in New Mexico but moved to the Bay Area in 2008. The company now has shops in Berkeley and Oakland and sells selected half-pints at various Bay Area markets. Flavors are bright and veer toward the unusual (lavender, cardamom). The basil ice cream is a particularly versatile treat that works well not only as a dessert but paired with savory foods as well because it is not very sweet. Upon taking a pre-packed container home, we were surprised that it isn't green in color.
It's kind of a trompe l'oeil because you expect to see green after taking off the lid and inhaling the strong scent of basil, but the herb has been infused into organic cream rather than as an inclusion and the ice cream is totally white.
Incidentally, the company itself is green, with a commitment to sustainability.
