Are you looking for something festive to do with relatives this holiday season? Or do you simply need a distraction or excuse to remove yourself from the company of your weird and annoying family? We suggest taking an afternoon to peruse the impressive edible masterpieces created by the talented pastry chefs/enthusiasts of this fair city. Starting with the two-story, 22-foot tall gingerbread house on display at The Fairmont, you can observe that with about two thousand pounds of royal icing, a pastry team can create a homestead bigger (and more delicious) than my apartment.
The Sheraton Palace is hosting its sixth-annual gingerbread decorating competition for charity. A sample of this year's submissions includes a tribute to The Giants 2012 World Series win, an entry depicting an edible Chinatown, and one called "Have a Very GUMPSY Holiday." You too! And don't forget to head over to the The Westin St. Francis and check out their rotating, 12-foot holiday sugar castle. Insert joke about cavities here.
Or, if you want to make your own holiday masterpiece, 18 Reasons in the Mission is offering one last Gingerbread House Decorating class for $35 on Tuesday December 18th, Faletti Foods sells a build-your-own-gingerbread-house kit for $15, and, of course if you are just barely motivated, you can always just buy a box of graham crackers and a tub-o-frosting and build yourself a glorified faux gingerbread shack. Or forget the building part and just eat the graham crackers with the frosting -- we won't tell.
