5A5 Steak Lounge, which recently got its namesake A5 Wagyu beef back in house after a period of it being off the market, has a fiery appetizer on the menu at the moment. While the short season of shishito peppers is waning, the biggest and hottest examples of them are ending up on the plate at this restaurant.
We ordered them with a group of four last night and three-quarters of the table stared at them in horror. They definitely look intimidating. These peppers are typically picked when they are a bit smaller and milder, so what you get here is really for those who like moderately elevated capsaicin levels. A drizzle of sweet ponzu sauce and the salty umami of quivering bonito fish flakes helps cut into the buzz. Don't worry, they're not so hot that they're not going to give you the sweaty eyeball syndrome. Live a little.
