Desi Danganan, Tim Luym, and Jacobo Juarez are among the crew who have spearheaded a new pop-up dinner series called Eastern Addition. Luym previously worked as a chef for Poleng Lounge, the now defunct Western Addition restaurant and club owned by Danganan; he now is consulting chef for the Attic in San Mateo and has his own Filipino food mobile called the Wow Truck. Juarez, a popular local DJ better known as Hakobo, recently sold his Mission club Som Bar in pursuit of this and other new creative ventures. The series prefaces a larger project that's expected to come to fruition in three years from the group, which is the return of The Summit, a cafe/art space/gathering place that Danganan first built in the Mission but shuttered earlier this year.
The three planned pop-ups will find Luym largely exploring the cuisine of Burma, Vietnam, Japan and the Philippines with guest collaborators they find to be unsung heroes, including former Bushi-Tei owner Tak Matsuba and Burmese Kitchen's Dennis Lin. Each event will take place at Vinyl Wine Bar in the Western Addition.
With about 12 days left on a Kickstarter initiative, Eastern Addition is a little more than halfway toward a goal of raising $10,000 to help defray the costs of hosting this pop-up series. Some pretty great incentives are being offered in exchange for donations, including a free meal at one of the three dinners with a $25 pledge. Those with more to give can get free meals, gift packages, and even private dinners for up to 25 people. A $45 donation gets you a ticket to this weekend's pre-pop-up kickoff party, a BBQ and oyster fest held at the Bold Italic office on October 6.
This crew is just getting started with flexing its collective creative muscle. The dinner series will hopefully be followed up with a longer pop-up residency of up to six months in the East Bay as part of Oakland's Pop Up Hood project next year. It's both the start of something big, and something old beginning anew.
