Where: 18th Street between Dolores and Guerrero
When: Sat., Sept. 29, 12-6 p.m.
Cost: $20 for books of food/beverage tickets (items priced $2 and up); tickets available on-site or in advance via Brown Paper Tickets
The rundown: Bi-Rite Market hosts a bi-annual block party to raise money for six neighboring non-profits: 826 Valencia, The Women's Building, Nextcourse, Buen Dia Family School, Holy Family Day Home, and Bi-Rite affiliate 18 Reasons. For those unfamiliar with this particular block of 18th Street, it's quite delicious, and the participation of most of the great food and beverage businesses in the area (including Namu Gaji, Delfina, Tartine Bakery, Kasa Indian Eatery, Bi-Rite Creamery, and Out The Door) adds up to a very solid tasting event.
More non-professional bakers are needed for the pie contest, the main event which starts at 1:30 p.m. (full disclosure: Yours truly will be judging the best entries alongside Leah Garchik of the Chronicle and Bi-Rite Creamery owners Kris Hoogerhyde and Anne Walker). To pre-register for the pie contest, sign up here. Volunteers are still needed for the overall event; email email@example.com for more information on this or the pie contest.
