Fancy a food festival this weekend but don't feel like fighting the crowds across the bay at the Eat Real Fest? Stay closer to home and soak up all the Greek culture you can handle at the Annunciation Cathedral's annual Taste of Greece festival in the Mission.
Expect to find all the Greek food you could ever want, from savory items like moussaka, pastitsio (baked pasta), souvlaki, gyros, tiropita, and spanakopita, to sweet pastries in all shapes and sizes -- all of it handmade by the congregation. There will be baklava, naturally, but don't miss the loukoumades (warm doughnuts soaked in honey and sprinkled with cinnamon and nuts) or our personal favorites, galaktoboureko (cream of wheat-like custard baked in phyllo and soaked in syrup) and kataifi (like baklava, except the phyllo dough shell is shredded, giving it an appearance reminiscent of hay bales).
Wash it all down with a thick Greek coffee, then kick up your heels and join the dancing. Opa!
