Ryan Scott is a Top Chef alum who premiered his own television show Food Rush on the Live Well Network on September 8. His eatery Market & Rye, which has locations in West Portal and Potrero, features a menu that centers on salads and sandwiches, many with a playful edge.
Since Market & Rye opened earlier this year, we've had a crush on the roast beef sandwich. It features a smear of horseradish aioli and melted fontina cheese. Lightly salted rye bread completes the look and offers a twinge of pleasant bitterness.
A tangle of upland cress provides an herbal freshness, but the highlight of the sandwich outside of the thinly sliced roast beef is the crunch provided by Funyuns, that weird hybrid between a chip and an onion ring that your mom never let you have. It's a bit of trashy fun, to be sure, and brings a completeness to lunch.
At $9, it's admittedly not a super-cheap sandwich, but you definitely won't have to buy any chips to go with it.
