There are a few quality local radio spots and programs that help to build appetites in between traffic and news reports. The godfather of Bay Area food radio is Gene Burns, whose Dining Around program ran for many years on KGO 810 AM until moving up the dial to KKSF 910 AM last fall. Burns is recovering from a stroke he suffered in January and his longtime producer Joel Riddell has stepped in as the lively new host.
Riddell takes the Dining Around tag seriously, and traverses the greater Bay Area with remarkable dedication, hopping food and drink establishments and events through every local area code to provide a well-rounded look at the Northern California culinary world. Listen live on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., or grab the weekly podcast.
Ryan Scott, a Top Chef alum and owner of two Market & Rye restaurants in San Francisco, offers a new recipe every Monday at 7:35 a.m., and hosts Cooking with Ryan Scott on Saturdays from 4 to 6 p.m. on KGO, portions of which are podcast. He's also been filming episodes around town for his upcoming series, Food Rush, on the Live Well Network.
San Francisco Chronicle restaurant critic Michael Bauer airs a weekly on KGO called "At the Table with Michael Bauer." Listen for it on Thursdays or queue up a marathon of podcasts on demand. Recent spots include his choice for the best pozole in town as well as recommendations for eating in Mill Valley and Santa Cruz.
Marcia Gagliardi of Tablehopper also pops up with a weekly spot on KGO, "You Gotta Eat This," which airs throughout the day on Tuesdays and is also podcast. Her enthusiasm for her dish of the week makes you want to drop everything and hunt it down.
KCBS 740 AM/106.9 FM is also a good place for food advice. Another veteran of Bay Area food radio is Narsai David, whose "Food News" of recipes, book reviews, and tips run throughout the day on Saturdays, while Liam Mayclem, host of sister TV station CBS5's Eye on the Bay program, provides five tasty questions for Bay Area chefs on "Foodie Chap," airing throughout each day and podcast on its own site.
