There Are Two Conservative Girl Scout Cookie Boycotts This Year

Posted By on Wed, Jan 25, 2012 at 8:11 AM

According to an article in Salon yesterday, this year Girl Scout Cookies are under attack. Yes, cookies. Conservative activists have spotted a tenuous link between the Girl Scouts and Planned Parenthood -- apparently, some scouts attended an event at which a Planned Parenthood UK brochure arguing for "sexual and reproductive rights" was distributed -- and have called for a boycott until the Brownies stop linking arms with the "abortion giant."

But that's not the only Thin Mint boycott call circulating around the country. As the Huffington Post reports, a former scout from Ventura County wants us to keep away from the Samoas because earlier this year, a Colorado troop let a 7-year-old trans girl join. The Girl Scouts of Colorado even put out a press release stating, "If a child identifies as a girl and the child's family presents her as a girl, Girl Scouts of Colorado welcomes her as a Girl Scout," which makes SFoodie a little misty-eyed.

So, as cookie season nears, the rumor war is on. HonestGirlScouts, a crackpot

website circulating all anti-scout news stories and boycott calls, has gone up.

Buck Angel, the FTM porn star who is a, um, hero to many gay men in

America has come out in defense of the scouts. As SFoodie remembers from the grape boycott and the Salman Rushdie

fatwa, these things can linger in the collective consciousness long

after the original campaign is called off.

We also know that you can't make up this kind of viral marketing opportunity. SFoodie knows one

industrious Girl Scout in town who would be more than happy to capitalize on

your pro-trans, pro-Planned Parenthood sentiments, and we're sure she's

not alone. We were planning on ordering an extra box of Thin Mints from

her next month. Now we're contemplating two. For the freezer, you know.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
