The team at the Lagunitas Brewery says "Lagunitas Sucks."
They're in the process of installing a shiny new 250-barrel brewhouse
which will make the brewery an even bigger prescence in the national market. So, sales aren't sucking. Lagunitas' newer releases have garnered widespread praise, so quality isn't on the decline.
The self-depricating brew stems from the brewery's decision to cancel this year's production of the popular Brown Shugga seasonal beer.
The nearly 10% ABV warmer is a staple in Lagunitas' lineup, but it takes a long time to make and ties up brewery resources. Owner Tony Magee noted that for every case of Brown Shugga produced, the brewery was shorting 3 cases of their regular production beers. With their impending production increase, this shouldn't be an issue next year. In the meantime, however, the brewery offered this gold nugget of an apology: "There is no joy in our hearts and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it all to be over."
Thankfully, there's a silver lining to this sad holiday tale. The Lagunitas Sucks Holiday Ale: Brown Shugga Substitute. The beer purports to be "full of complexishness" from the addition of 4 grains -- barley, rye, wheat, and oats. Like many other Lagunitas products, the beer's signature is a floral, citrusy hop aroma and flavor.
Fans of IPAs with notes of tangerine and grapefruit will be pleased. Bottles are on shelves now, or you can try the beer on draft at a Lagunitas Holiday Party at City Beer Store next week. Ugly holiday sweaters welcome.
