1. No more potato chips? Lay's must be plotting some serious spin control right now. Two weeks ago, a new study indicated that people who ate potato chips were more likely to gain weight than people who didn't. Now another study argues that the reason we're all overweight is not that we're eating bigger entrées but that we snack too much. While entrée sizes have gone up 14 percent, we're eating 4.9 snacks and meals per day now, compared to 3.8 in the 1970s. (Guilty.)
2. Uh-oh, parts 1-3. According to the Wall Street Journal, a National Restaurant Association survey suggests that people are eating out less, and optimism among restaurateurs is slumping. Food Safety News suggests those oh-so-trendy backyard chickens are giving their owners, including kids, salmonellosis. And according to the Chicago Times, the House recently voted to defund the Microbiological Data Program, which tests produce for pathogens such as the variant of E. coli that killed 48 people in Europe this summer.
3. Young, Gifted, and Food-Focused. Splashlife just put together a list of 30 "futurist foodies" under 30. Hometown heroes include Oakland's Hai Vo, founder of www.liverealnow.org; Sean Baker, chef of Gather Restaurant; and Food First's Tanya Kerssen.
