Missed out on some great BBQ during Memorial Day Weekend because your partner is a vegetarian? Don't own a meat smoker?* Or just lack the skills to make fall-off-the-bone tender slow-smoked BBQ? Well, fret no more! You can easily remedy that problem at Criolla Kitchen, the month-old soul food restaurant on Market Street.
Criolla has been wowing customers with its fried chicken and waffles, shrimp-stuffed hush puppies, Louisiana catfish, rice and beans, and Cuban-inspired fare. Bagdad Café, the previous tenant, never inspired such a following. In this review, it's the ribs and brisket we want to praise -- especially after we learned they're supplied by none other than the winner of the 2011 SF Weekly Best Of for Barbecued Ribs, Slow Hand BBQ. Sweet.
So head to Criolla Kitchen and enjoy succulent BBQ without spending eight long hours tinkering with a smoker. Oh, and veggie eaters get a few options, including two salads and a vegetarian black beans and rice. Soul food for all!
Criolla Kitchen: 2295 Market (at 16th St.), 552-5811. Hours: Daily 6-11 p.m., longer hours and brunch to be added in the future.
