1. New Trend: Avocados. At the Castro Muni station, we recently noticed a slew of targeted ads from the California Avocado Commission. This seems an unnecessary campaign for a product that's already so ubiquitous, but apparently there are yet-untapped markets for that green gold. Case in point: the California Whopper, a new-to-the-U.S. product that is slathered in BK's version of guacamole. Subway also just unleashed its first avocado product, the Turkey and Bacon Avocadohhh sandwich. Hey guys, the early '90s called. They want their food trend back.
2. Food Along Party Lines. Hunch.com released this chart of stats gleaned from almost 350,000 respondents, dividing eating habits along political lines. These fun facts are sure to provide a few chuckles -- conservatives qualified Chinese takeout as "exotic ethnic food," liberals are more likely to find a bacon cheeseburger "disgusting," and everybody prefers a diagonally cut PB&J. Maybe reaching across the aisle should involve a hummus-for-meatloaf exchange?
3. I Don't Wanna Grow Up. In a fluff piece on Eatocracy, Food and Wine editor Kate Krader dishes on the food cravings of the most important men in the world. Obama loves hamburgers, Sarkozy is a chocolate man, and Putin needs his ice cream. This just in: The next G8 summit will be at Chuck E. Cheese!
