This Saturday: Make (and Drink!) Gin Cocktails with Scott Beattie

The rundown: Scott Beattie returns to the Ferry Building to continue this "Best of SF" cocktail classes. This one's focused on gin and classic gin cocktails. What's that? You hate gin?

Gin is no stranger to being disliked. Many people associate it with their first real hangover, forever tainting its botanical fragrance with memories of driving the porcelain bus. If you're sitting at a bar and you hear someone ask the bartender, "Can you make that with vodka instead?" you can bet they're substituting out the gin. And it's not just that, gin's historically gotten a bad rap. In mid-1700's England, changes in British tax laws made it incredibly inexpensive, and therefore the drink of the distasteful lower class. It was often poorly made and sometimes straight-up poisonous. However, despite some blemishes in its past, modern day gin is versatile enough for working with both savory or sweet cocktails.

Joining Scott will be Davorin Kuchan, distiller and proprietor of Belmont's Old World Spirits to talk about his unique process for making Blade and Rusty Blade aged gin, along with several other soon-to-be-released brands.

The class will include a brief history of gin distillation, a discussion of current gin making methods and botanicals, and a gin tasting. Through hands-on cocktail making and drinking, you'll learn about Dutch genever and Plymouth style gins, and London dry gin. Learn to make The Last Word, The Aviation, Corpse Reviver, and of course, a Martini. With four cocktails and a gin tasting, getting to the market early and enjoying something fried and filling is highly recommended.
