Candlestick-like winds howled at a recent Giants game at AT&T Park, so SFoodie sought refuge by sneaking into the exclusive Club level (look straight ahead and just keep walking... ). Once in, why not try the newest offering from upscale food-service provider Bon Appétit?
At Murph's Pub we found the Blarney Burger ($10.25), a behemoth with "stunt food" written all over it: a half-pound Angus patty topped with a fistful of warm, hand-cut corned beef, melted Swiss, tangy coleslaw, and Russian dressing. Unfortunately, everything worked but the burger, a dry, overcooked puck pulled from a warming tray. After our second bite, we removed it ― what remained was a pretty decent deli sandwich. Perhaps most impressive was the soft, eggy bun that molded to its contents, allowing a fan to hold the Blarney with one hand while sipping a Guinness with the other.
Around the corner at the Farmer's Market stand we discovered caramel apple fries, $5 (it's ballpark food, so the marketing powers need to come up with as unhealthy-sounding a name as possible). Sticks of tart, organic Granny Smiths were drenched in a pool of rich caramel, impossible to eat by hand and absolutely decadent. Once we finished forking up the apples, we tilted the cardboard container to our lips and slurped the caramel that remained.
Yeah, it was the VIP section, but it's still a baseball game. Right?
