The old saying "candy is dandy, but liquor is quicker" might not always be true, but our experience shows that cupid is most effective when firing shots of booze, not arrows. With that in mind, here's SFoodie's guide for finding love (or at least a buzz) this Valentine's Day weekend:
Press Club Wine and Cupcakes
When: Sat., Feb. 12, 8 p.m.-1 a.m.
Where: Press Club, 20 Yerba Buena (at Market)
The skinny: A singles mixer that hopes to match up folks just in time for V-Day ― a bit too contrived for our taste, but the wine and cupcake flight (three vinos paired with three cupcakes, $25) has us feeling tingly. Dear Press Club: You had us at "wine."
Orson's Valentine's Day Dinner
When: Sat., Feb. 12 through Mon., Feb. 14
Where: Orson, 508 Fourth St. (at Bryant)
The skinny: A special prix-fixe for $65, including items like slow-cooked loins and "bon-bondage" (bonbons with blindfolds). Better, an additional $25 gets you a cocktail with each course, courtesy of bar manager Ian Adams, or wine pairings by sommelier Carl Grubbs.
Forbidden Fruit Cocktail
Where: Prospect, 300 Spear (at Folsom)
The skinny: Prospect's Brooke Arthur is mixing up a special cocktail that goes over like a French kiss. The Forbidden Fruit is a light yet heady blend of Suze (a French aperitif wine not generally available in the U.S.), Calvados, and manzanilla sherry, perfumed with a grapefruit twist.
Heaven's Dog's Anti-Valentine's Cocktail List
Where: Heaven's Dog, 1148 Mission (at Seventh St.)
The skinny: If you're single and proud of it or just want to wallow in self-pity, Heaven's Dog bartenders Dion Jardine and Chris Lane have a short list of cupid-killers: a classic tiki Painkiller, the Lone Tree, and a boilermaker (Trumer Pils and a shot of bourbon). If those don't help, self-medicate with an order or two of pork buns and call it a night.
