The two contestants from San Francisco had the self-described Battle of the Queens relationship. Tim Nugent, from Scala's Bistro, is known as the Snow Queen (his food's frozen and he's gay). Then there's the adorable Yigit Pura of Taste Catering, who was down to business, explaining the need for OCD in pastry chefs through precision, detail, and calculations. He's one chef we definitely wouldn't mind obsessing over this season.
The first Quickfire Challenge seemed easy enough: You had to make your own signature dessert ... and then the twist ― it had to be a cupcake. The winner of this challenge was this guy right here (the kind of guy with two thumbs pointing to himself), Seth. He plagued us all from the start of the show by stating he looks like Marky Mark and Dexter. We kept waiting for him to show up in his Calvins, or slice strawberries till they bled.
Speaking of celebrity lookalikes, Danielle Keene looks a hell of a lot like Megan Fox, but foxier because she can make you a cake. She is also a bit of a troublemaker, since, as she said, "Now I'm ready to throw up" after sampling her competitor's dish. She blamed all the chocolate. We blame Princess Bitch behavior.
For the Elimination Round, Mr. Chocolate himself, Jacques Torres, joined the cast of regular judges (Johnny Iuzzini, Hubert Keller, and Dannielle Kyrillos), for a chocolatastic challenge. The winner was Heather H., for her elegant, dark-chocolate mousse torte with chocolate Grand Marnier sauce. The loser heading home: Tania, and her grainy flourless chocolate torte.
It's too early to say where we stand on Just Desserts, though we know we like the voluptuous Gail Simmons holding our hand to explore the dark (chocolate) side of Top Chef.
Our predictions: Seth and Danielle will be the most hated. Zac will have the best lines of the season ― he's already said, "Making dessert is kind of like giving birth to a baby," and that he "can't do anything without a deep fryer and a little glitter."
We'll leave the winner predictions up to you. Who do you think will take the cake?
