Don't Sound Like a Tool: The (Cooking) Tool Edition

Posted By on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 9:34 AM

Don't Sound Like a Tool is SFoodie's series of audio

pronunciation guides to sort-of-common-but-not-obvious words we

keep encountering on wine lists and menus. No more shame, no more pointing,

no more godawful imitations of a language you don't speak.

  • tah-ZHEEN.
A couple years ago, Sur La Table put out a cookbook called Things Cooks Love, essentially a full-color store catalog with recipes. Flipping through the book, we realized that we had never heard of some of the specialty pots and pans that we were supposed to love.

Do you really need a couscoussier or an olla? Probably not, but you do want to confidently read the labels off the shelves at Williams-Sonoma. And even though no professional cook would deign to say "food

processor," half of them mispronounce "Robot Coupe," the word they use

instead (it's a French brand of industrial-strength food processors). Here is SFoodie's pronunciation guide to slightly recherché cooking tools, with links to pictures and descriptions.

Listen to the audio pronunciations as you follow along:

Couscoussier (or couscoussière)

Paella pan

Robot Coupe

Santoku knife
Tagine (or tajine)

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
