What to expect? At a casting call in Seattle earlier this month, food writer Leslie Kelly found the experience sort of strange, grueling, and yet seriously compelling. Some 300 gastro wannabes waited four hours for their moment with the producers. That room temperature dish you were supposed to bring? Not everyone got the memo. "People stood in line for hours with things like mac and cheese and tandoori chicken," Kelly says, foods that clearly weren't safe to eat. "One of the judges actually threw up," she says.
Kelly's geoduck crudo was good enough to get her a call-back for a 30-minute on-camera interview, followed by a 27-page background check. "They asked me if I'd ever been an exotic dancer." Now, she's waiting to hear from the producers if she's made it. Taping is said to start in February.
