New Bohemia Returns to the Armory for S.F.'s Kinkiest New Year's Eve

Posted By on Mon, Dec 7, 2015 at 12:00 PM

It’s nearly 2015. There's an upside-down Christmas tree at the top of the stairs, which are lined with extravagant oil paintings of naked men and women — well, naked except for leather restraints, that is. In the parlor, the crowd by the bar seems almost oblivious of the gagged woman being flogged and suspended from the ceiling.

This was the scene almost one year ago at New Bohemia, the riotous New Year’s Eve party at the Armory, infamous headquarters of Kink.com.

In the summer of 2013, former culture editor for the dearly departed San Francisco Bay Guardian, Caitlin Donohue, joined forces with the other coolest kid in town, hip-hop party and video producer, Kelly Lovemonster to launch 4UMag.com, an online lifestyle magazine that describes itself as “not a total vanity project.”

“We’re on most of the covers,” she told me, “like Oprah.”

“The content is so closely tied to how Kelly and I view the world,” says Donohue, “our social circle, our extended worldwide network of people that get us and have this similar sexual philosophy.”

The Golden Age of TV Movies: Mae West (1982)

Welcome to The Golden Age of TV Movies, a monthly column about those wonderful made-for-TV movies of yesteryear.

Some have said that Mae West (1893-1980) was the Madonna of her day, but in actuality it was the other way around. It was West, after all, who came first.

Mae West was unique in the annals of show business. Pushing middle age and somewhat plump when she became a movie star in 1932, West simultaneously presented herself as both a sex symbol and a satire of a sex symbol. She celebrated and owned her sexuality during an era in which polite society pretended that sex didn't exist — West was only too happy to remind folks that it did.

In Mae West's world, sex was something to be celebrated.

Just days after five of the country’s top LGBT advocacy organizations echoed Amnesty International’s recent declaration of support for the decriminalization of prostitution, seven employees of the popular gay male escort advertising platform, rentboy.com, were arrested this morning in New York City.

Federal agents from the Department of Homeland Security, with the assistance of NYPD, raided Rentboy’s headquarters on West 14th Street, seizing both digital and paper files and placing 50-year-old CEO Jeffery Hurant, along with six other employees, into custody. Earlier today the U.S. government also issued warrants authorizing the seizure of $1.4 million in “alleged criminal proceeds.”

NSFW: Trina Merry Is Painting Nudes at Famous S.F. Landmarks

Trina Merry is standing in front of a mural in the middle of Clarion Alley, daubing paint on a topless woman’s torso with the help of her assistant. A few young children and their mothers pay close attention, the occasional mural tourists smile and ask a polite question, and some drunks in stuporous violation of the sit/lie ordinance look on from 40 feet away. At one point, a Smart Car passes and we all step aside like suburban kids playing street hockey, but otherwise, Merry works unmolested.

New on Video: Simmering Czech Sexuality in Valerie and Her Week of Wonders

Jaromil Jireš's 1970 film Valerie and Her Week of Wonders is legendary, and not just because it has a terrific name. I believe I first read about Danny Peary's Cult Films books in the early 1990s, and when I worked at Le Video in the late '90s, the manager was more than a little proud of the fact that we had a low-gen VHS dub, which was the closest it had ever come to getting a domestic video release. It finally got appeared on DVD a decade ago from Facets Video, and now the Criterion Collection is releasing a 4K digital restoration on Blu-ray on June 30. It's the best that this lo-fi Czech New Wave film will ever look, all the better to luxuriate in its oddness.

Got Memorial Day Plans? The Sex Worker Fest Runs All Weekend

Posted By on Wed, May 20, 2015 at 2:04 PM

So rarely are sex workers afforded the right to tell their own stories in their own words. Too often, are the experiences of sex workers reduced to a titillating and exploitative news item illustrated by a stock photo of a woman in high heels leaning into a car with her face cropped out of the picture.

But every two years, San Francisco sex workers combat that unfortunate trend with the Sex Worker Film and Arts Festival, a 10-day symposium created by and for sex workers and their allies. The films, performances, and talks that take place during this festival aim to showcase the diverse and multi-faceted experiences of sex workers, from Australian brothel workers to porn legends.

Punch Drunk Lust: Red Light Lit's Intoxication Issue Out Friday

When Red Light Lit founders Veronica Christina and Jennifer Lewis chose the theme for their latest issue, “Everyone I Love is Drunk,” they had in mind a broad definition of intoxication — drunk on life, drunk on love, drunk on happiness. But after their first batch of submissions, they realized their contributors were taking the term much more literally.

“It made me realize how much drinking is involved in romance,” says Lewis. “It's not something that just happens in college. It's something that happens in San Francisco from age 20 to 50.”

Ethical Non-Monogamy Gets Its Due at the Premiere of Marriage 2.0

Posted By on Fri, Apr 24, 2015 at 11:00 AM

image001.jpg
Monoga-maybe? Hetero-flexible? Poly-Glamorous? If any of these categories describes your romantic life, you’re not alone. San Francisco has had a reputation as the world’s epicenter of the sexual revolution for over half a century. And while the landscape of the city is changing, the ethos of thinking outside the box when it comes to sex and relationships is still going strong.

On Saturday, May 2, porn stars, sex educators, and fans will strut the red carpet of the Victoria Theatre for the public premiere of Marriage 2.0, an independent film that merges porn with the mainstream to explore the ins and outs of ethical non-monogamy. Called a “game changer” for poly awareness, Marriage 2.0 garnered this year’s Feminist Porn Award for Movie of the Year.

Man Up!: SF Weekly tries Male Brazilian Waxing (Semi NSFW)

The New Millenium Male flexes and waxes! - SECRETSALONS.COM

  • The New Millenium Male flexes and waxes!

The days of definitive categorizations and labels for the modern male has lapsed and the MANual is in need of a major rewrite. In every new monthly installment of Man Up!, Juan De Anda and other male writers  will partake in activities that may have been deemed too “girly,” taboo, or crazy for men to participate in — ranging from manscaping to bridge climbing to Spanxing — in order to delve in the myriad of possibilities for masculine presentation and expression.

I truly wanted to bare myself to those who happened to be reading the inaugural article of this new series. I absolutely loved the idea of stripping away antiquated ideas of what being a man meant in today’s world of bridging differences through new modes of behavior and expression. I just never thought this would become a matter of pubic concern. (No, you did not just read a typo.)

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
