New Year’s Eve is upon us — the holiday with the most pressure. There’s pressure to find an epic party, pressure to look like a million bucks (and try not to spend that much), pressure to have at least one pic posted to Instagram the next day to show the Insta-world that your New Year’s Eve was clearly better than everyone else’s, and of course, pressure to have someone to kiss at midnight. Not to mention the pressure to make and keep New Year’s resolutions, but that’s a different story.
Especially if you’re newly single, the prospect of finding someone to smooch as soon as it officially hits midnight can be pretty stressful.
According to a study conducted by the folks at the dating app Clover
, December is a popular month for break-ups, as well as cheating — which can, clearly, lead to breakups.
Based on data it collected from 150,000 of its users, Clover found that in the month of December alone, there has been a 300% increase of new Clover users who are already in a relationship at the time they sign up for the app.
Also, this is old news at this point, but a graph created by data-journalist David Mccandless
in 2010 pulled data from Facebook to show the times of the year that the most people change their Facebook relationship status to "single." According to the graph, the winter holidays see a massive increase in newly single Facebook users, as does "Spring Break."
So, if you recently became single, or are thinking of taking a break from your sweetie to see what’s available in the internet dating world, you are not alone. (Although we do not condone the latter.)
If you’re freaking out about finding an awesome New Year’s party or a kiss to ring in the new year, try thinking about this New Year’s Eve as just an ordinary Wednesday. If you end up at a so-so party and find yourself drunkenly begging your best friend to kiss you because you didn’t find an attractive stranger to do so, it will probably still be one of the most exciting Wednesdays you’ve had in a while.
And if you end up at the Party to End All Parties and have to fight off attractive strangers all vying to be your first kiss of 2015, then it will probably be the most epic Wednesday you’ve ever had, and you’ll have dope Instagram pics to show for it.
But no matter where you end up on NYE, here's a toast to hoping the dating game in 2015 will be short, sweet, and you'll find someone worth your time.
