The Kinsey Sicks Remind Us There's An Election (Ahem) Coming Up

In addition to the Summer Olympics and Leap Day Williams, one of the things you can rely on to appear on a quadrennial basis is the fake Presidential campaign, typically done for comedic purposes. (I guess there are real Presidential campaigns too, but they're usually just depressing.) You've seen it more than once, whether in the comics or in beer advertisements or whatnot, the "_____ for President!" gags.

But supposing you're an a cappella drag troupe that describes yourself as America's Favorite Dragapella Beautyshop Quartet, and you can't help but notice that there's only a single consonant's difference between "erection" and "election." That's just too good to pass up! So why not go both ways, so to speak? The Kinsey Sicks are doing just that, with Electile Dysfunction: The Kinsey Sicks for President.

Political comedy isn't difficult to come by these days, what with the Interwebz and The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. (Heck, even though Mark Russell has retired from performing, he's still writing jokes and posting them to his website, and it's easy enough to imagine what his Chick-fil-A bon mots would sound like set to bouncy piano. No wonder PBS is dying.) And neither are drag performances, 'specially not in San Francisco. Political drag performances? Sure, we've got that too.

But political drag performance done with live, four-part a cappella harmony? That's where The Kinsey Sicks win. It's not all necessarily cutting-edge commentary, but it doesn't have to be, and it still beats Sharon Needles any day of the week.

Electile Dysfunction: The Kinsey Sicks for President runs through Sunday, August 19 at The Rrazz Room at Hotel Nikko, 222 Mason St (at O'Farrell). Tickets are $35-$40.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
